While you prepare for a fun and safe summer, here are some grilling safety tips to consider and implement.

Summer is here, and families and businesses plan for larger gatherings and increased capacities. It is the best time for pool weather and barbecued meals. While you prepare for a fun and safe summer, here are some grilling safety tips to consider and implement.

Tips While You Grill

Ensure grilling safety with a healthy dose of common sense, including:

  • Use any charcoal BBQ and propane grills outdoors
  • Make sure place the grill away from the home, deck railings, and overhanging tree branches
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area
  • Never leave your grill or firepit alone while it’s on
  • Always open your gas grill lid before you light it

Campfire/Fire Pits

Even if you don’t use propane, you might still rely on coal.

  • Supervise pets and children while the campfire/pit is burning because they might be curious to explore what you are doing and could try to distract you while you try to concentrate
  • Always keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a shovel with sand or dirt nearby you in case you need to extinguish a fire
  • When putting the fire out, apply water to the remaining flames or all coals in a fire. There should be no glow, heat, or flames remaining
  • Never leave a fire unattended, even for a short period of time

Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby

Any time you plan to use the grill, whether you are cooking steaks, hot dogs, or hamburgers, make sure there is a fire extinguisher nearby. Moreover, inspect your extinguisher routinely to ensure it doesn’t need to be recharged or will fail to function if a fire spreads from your grill.

Check Your Fire Starters

If you use propane as fuel, ensure the tanks or grill have no leaks. If you use coal, use the fluid meant for charcoal and avoid using kerosene or gas as your fuel, since they can be more unpredictable and volatile. This is because you will start a fire, just not one you can safely contain. Then, permit the charcoal and the ashes to cool down for some days before you dispose of them.

Lastly, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions that come with your grill. Overall, follow grilling safety tips and preventive measures when preparing delicious meats and vegetables in the summer.
