We all know how busy your life can be, with children and pets running everywhere and meals to cook and prepare. Sometimes, it’s easy to wander off while the stove is on and there is an open flame. This article provides fire safety tips while cooking in your kitchen.
Stay Nearby
Concentration is critical to fire safety. Whether using the stove or the oven, anything near a heating element can become a potential fire hazard. If you have to step out of the kitchen or divert your attention, it’s better to turn off the fire. Even when the burner is off, it’s still giving off heat, so displace the pots and pans. That way, you can prevent the most prevalent source of kitchen fires from surprising you when you already have enough on your mind.
Don’t Allow Too Many People in the Kitchen
You should make it a house rule that anyone not directly involved in helping you cook should remain outside the kitchen. Don’t allow too many people in; you can express this rule however you like – for example, “all nonessential personnel, please clear out.” This fire safety rule is crucial for mischievous children who may hurt themselves when you can’t look after them, or pets who are curious about walking near the stove to sneak a bite of what you are cooking.
Use a Timer
Determine whether you would like to set a timer on your phone, smart watch, or any other device you choose. You may even set a countdown timer on your microwave if possible. This way, once something is in the oven, you can remember to come and check on it after a specific time. By doing this, you can avoid burning whatever you are cooking, roasting, and baking.
Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby
Lastly, always keep a fire extinguisher near your kitchen. Make sure to inspect the condition of the fire extinguisher in your home. You may want to keep one in the laundry room and the garage. If you have several kitchen spaces, including one in your basement or an outdoor kitchen, you should prepare each of them with a fire extinguisher in case a fire should start suddenly.
